Type of mountain bike
There are a number of different mountain bikes available depending on where the cyclist wishes to use the bike. Trail bikes are the basic bikes which are used by individuals who are only interested in using them on local trails, for meeting friends. Cross country bikes are designed for travelling longer distances, at a higher speed, and have better climbing power. Fat bikes have tires of greater width varying from 3.7 inches to 5 inches, compared to conventional bikes and offer greater traction in snow, sand. These bikes are recommended for beginners. All mountain bikes are designed specifically for riding on mountainous terrain, with steep descents.

Mountain bike size
It is important to select the right size of the mountain bike based on the height of the person who will be using the bike. The person should be able to sit and get off the bike comfortably. Most of the bicycle manufacturers are providing a size chart for the bicycles which they are selling, which offers guidelines on choosing right bike model depending on the height of the cyclist. If the height of the cyclist is falling between two different sizes, it is advisable to choose a smaller sized bike , since it will be easier for the cyclist to handle a small bike, compared to handle a bike which is one size larger.

Bike suspension
Depending on the presence or absence of bike suspension, the mountain bikes can be classified into three main types. Rigid bikes have no suspension at all, and are easier to maintain. Hardtail bikes have a suspension fork on the front side only, no suspension at the back. These bikes are less expensive than full suspension bikes and require less maintenance also, as they have fewer moving parts. The hardtail bikes are preferred by cross country bikers, as the power is fully transmitted to the wheels. Full suspension bikes have shock absorbers at both the front and rear wheel , and offer a comfortable ride for the bicycle rider. However, these bikes are more expensive and require more maintainence.

Mountain bike wheel size
The mountain bikes are available in different sizes like 26 inches, 27.5 inches and 29 inches. Earlier most of the bikes used 26 inches wheels, however they have been replaced by larger sized wheels. In general, as the size of the wheel increases, it is easier for the bike to roll over larger sized obstacles, so many riders who go on cross country rides prefer mountain bikes with 29 inch wheels. However it may take more time to accelerate these larger wheels, and also the larger wheels cannot be maneuvered by the cyclist in any direction, as easily as the smaller wheels of size 26 inches. 27.5+ inch wheels are available , which are of greater width, and are more stable.

Frame materials, gears
The frame material used for the mountain bike also determines the quality, weight, life and price of the bike. Most of the mountain bikes sold are using aluminum since it is inexpensive, lightweight and does not corrode easily. Steel is also inexpensive , however the bikes are heavier, and it may corrode over a period of time. Titanium and carbon fiber are both light weight, and strong, however these materials are expensive, so they are mainly used in high end mountain bikes. The number of gears required depends on the terrain over which the bike will be used. If the cyclist is planning to ride the bike over steep hills, more gears will be required, while a person who cycling on flat terrain, will find a bike with few gears adequate.

So the above guidelines can help you choose the right mountain bike.
